With the move to two Consumer Drive Health Plans (CDHP) in 2018, employees are required to pay 100% of the cost of care. This includes the full discounted price of prescription drugs until the deductible has been met. Once the deductible is met, coverage is subject to any applicable co-insurance. The Generic Preventive Drug List provides coverage for certain maintenance medications at no cost to the employee prior to the deductible being met.

Allowing members to bypass their deductible and pay nothing for these maintenance medications is an important component of managing overall health and health care costs.

What is the Preventive Generic Drug List and why is it important?

CVS/Caremark has developed a list of generic drugs that are used in the prevention of various medical conditions. These prescription drugs have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to be used in the prevention of various medical conditions as defined by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Some of these medications may be prescribed for preventive and non-preventive purposes under circumstances such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. These medications, when taken regularly, can help prevent disease or manage existing conditions avoiding potential future complications.
